Felt is an environmentally friendly material which is tactile, soft, durable and comes in a variety of colours.
Thicker density felt offers the possibilities of creating strong architectural structures.
Felt has great accoustic qualities and can be fire-proofed.
Felt is wool or hair matted into a fabric by rolling, pressing and beating. It is a non woven mass of fibres.
Felt changed the lanscape of in dustrial manufacturing in the 18th century.
Sheep wool is the most common type of wool used to make felt because it is a fibre that has a hollow chore and an outer casing of small overlapping scales. When sheep wool becomes wet the scales swell up and become entangled instead of overlapping.
The application of felt in industry is varied from anti-vibration fabric for dust collection, filtration pads for oil. air, liquid and heat insulation, making industrial gloves, ink pads and print rollers, percussion drum beaters, sound absorption, polishing and buffing wheels.
